I can't really say I like this photograph (possibly because I'm too big an admirer of Dix's work), but I do like Herr Steger's attention to detail in the stockings. He might even have improved that particular part for me.

...and that Dix image always reminded me (just a wee bit) of this one...

August Sander, Secretary at West German Radio, Cologne, 1931

BTW, no worries m'dear. I've been a bit of an insomniac in recent days and I spend far too much time procrastinating online when I have interviews to work on...time for me to get back to "real" work. Oh, BTW, the Antennae interview (which I think may be my longest yet!) will be online soon. I'll do a proper post when it's up. woot woot!

Just one example of the many artists who got inspired by the great Johann Heinrich Füssli:

"Nightmare" by Nikolaj Abraham Abildgaard, 1800

Also in cinema:  Gothic by Ken Russell is an excellent, chilling piece of historic fiction.

I really love this thread.
It makes me think about there being a visual language that we all artists use and add to and use it to talk back and forth to each other. Some simply ape it without understanding what they're saying.

I'm so grateful for this comparison and indeed for all the beautiful additions to this thread in recenty days/weeks - particularly miffy horror's ones which I find deeply inspiring and baffling.

It's even more important for me that it comes from an artist because the last thing I wanted this thread to be is accusatory - it should indeed, as you said, be a visual conversation of sorts.

.. and just when you thought rip-offs couldn't possibly get any more blatant, along comes this:
