Just a quick update on possibly my favourite thread here: I currently have around 30 cases of artwork thievery/inspiration in my bookmarks and I will post them here over the next couple of weeks. NO-ONE WILL GET AWAY! NO-ONE!  wise old man

I particularly like the juxtaposition of Damien Hirst's face vs John LeKay's face. Very insightful that. I think if Hirst had used John's skull for "For The Love of God", I would have liked it even better. Yes, I did see it in person and it was super sparkly in the blackened out room and made me all spastically happy. And that's not something I can say about the majority of contemp(t)orary art.

Also, I'm sorry (?) to say it, but Hirst's sheep is a million times better executed, arranged and positioned than LeKay's. I know that's not the point as the thievery is quite obvious, but still.

And as for the Joseph Cornell comparison, it's such a difficult matter as he seems to pwn simply EVERYTHING in the mixed media / Wunderkammer world. His name always turned up whenever I tried to explain my ex's work to the uninitiated. D'uh.

The spin paintings, yes, that was just stupid, Damien and the Lori Precious case a bit sad.

But anyways, thanks for the entertaining read, tb and for reminding me that I need to steal that Spastics Society statue from the sweets shoppe down the road!  bubbles

For the sake of completeness:

I was somewhat hesitant to post this as it's another example for the tumblr perversion: copyright information replaced by the tags "sensual women nude lesbian".

Not that my own tumblr would be that much better ...

I can't thank you enough for posting these as it's actually something that has irritated me for a long, long time.

And I mean not just the above dubious artist but tattoo "artists" in general thinking it's totally okay to rip off imagery from others because that's how they "research" tattoos in the first place, i.e. Google image search.

Yes, there are a few exceptions of great and inventive artists but the big junk are fucking thieves and I can only hope that now that more and more street artists get sued over copyright infringement so will be tattoo artists at one point in the future.

I'm sick of this laissez-faire approach just because it's a genre where reference is needed. It doesn't justify plagiarism.

I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean, but it makes my eyeballs sting to see that um..."piece"...next to Chris' work.  Confused

sorry, that that meant not that, as in not that exact image but the overall style

i dont get that with tattoo artists either and it really confuses me how its kind of just a given that you can rip off someone's style. i dont really understand either how tattoo artists will tattoo the same design on other people, or just any image in fact that a person brings in regardless of who it belongs to

and yep seeing the two alongside each other is vile

I think it has a lot to do with many tattooists not really becoming tattooists because of an interest in art but more of an interest in the actual "scene" and... uhmm... the money, sadly.

Most tattoo studios only require basic illustration skills and no art school level or anything so you "learn" (or don't) on the job - depending on your willingness to improve your work.

I always felt that the best tattooists are those who experiment and don't copy too closely or not at all and the worst are the Google image search tracers and there's A LOT of them.

I know a guy who has a wolf tattooed on him and it's the first Google image search hit for "howling wolf". Meh.

found on tumblr so obviously source unknown
number 2000000891 that the internet/people have spoilt for me. micky mouse ears

this is off track but its funny so i will say it anyway.
i knew a guy that got a lion tattooed on his chest then when he went home and looked at it closely he realised the eyes were a bit off. at this point MOST people would go to a better tattooist to try and correct it but not him. he got out his own tattoo gun and tattooed a pair of sunglasses on the lion himself. THAT is one of the most retarded things ive ever heard, and funniest

I have no words for how bad this is and I cannot even be bothered to activate TinEye to find a source.

From the brand-new polished upper-middle class spikes to the cardboard ears, the dreadfully towered up hair, the pointless headphones, the cheap WonderBra, the shoulder pads imitating the shape of said cardboard ears. Yuck.

The lion-with-sunglasses story is amazing!
