Considering the fact that still-lives often had a Memento Mori character, I'm not sure what the squirrel in this oil painting should be representing. The Grim Reaper?!

I don't think anyone has posted any beatrix potter in this thread yet. She may be best known for rabbits, but her squirrel nutkin story is much more twisted, and funny:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tale_of_Squirrel_Nutkin
(note the link to an archived version of the story at project Gutenberg)

And off topic, but this one is great too:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tale_of_Two_Bad_Mice

Yay for nasty kids' stories!
(a nod to the recent struwwelpeter post)

This just in via my friend Suzanne Walsh:

Russian squirrel pack 'kills dog'

Squirrels have bitten to death a stray dog which was barking at them in a Russian park, local media report.

Well, this doesn't surprise me at all. After all, they're our new overlords. I like the fact that the "scientist" is trying to find explanations ("A pine cone shortage may have led the squirrels to seek other food sources") when it's clear that these are mutant supercreatures from outer space.
