Now that I have finally reached my puberty, I decided to get my first tattoo.

I realised that my life-long plan to get Hokusai's "Dream of the Fisherman's Wife" tattooed to my entire back is just never gonna happen unless I start with something smaller first.

I decided that it should be something emblematic (preferably a round aureole-like symbol) that goes to the back of my neck (middle) as I'm very fussy about all my "bodymodification" being centred. I get headaches when my septum spike is slightly more left than right and I had to remove my eyebrow piercing for the same reason.

Uhmm... anyhow... I came to the conclusion that the symbol should be something from the vanitas iconography (European or Mexican), a rune symbol, a grotesque pattern or a simplified tarot symbol. Basically, something clearly structured.

Having said that, I could also imagine having a Blanquet, CandyKiller or Camille Rose Garcia design on my skin - so I added those options too.

I chose a few very obvious (and not definitive) examples - just to get your opinions on this matter.

Also, if anyone of you owns a copy of Roemer Visscher's "Book of Emblems" from 1614 - or any other good books on emblematics and/or tarot symbols - I'd be really grateful for scans / recommendations / suggestions.

So here are your options:

- 1 -

- 2 -

- 3 -

- 4 -

- 5 -

- 6 -

- 7 -

- 8 -

Thankies!

That is indeed a very cool design, monsieur. I'd be very grateful if you could nevertheless cast your vote for the sake of... uhmm.. statistics.  Rolling Eyes

can't say i really like any of them, but Fortuna's Wheel would be my favourite. maybe it's the Chú Chulainn in me, but i only really like celtic tatoos. oh, and the designs that the maori scribbleheads do.

Yes, I absolutely must get one.  Wink

Interesting... Derek Nobbs just suggested that one too. So there's one more vote going to "La Calavera" than shown above.

Well, I guess I'd like Celtic tattoos too if I knew more about their background. I do think they're visually attractive, but they're just as exotic to me as tribal tattoos. I wish the Swiss ever came up with some simple yet decorative iconography.

Oh, and one more vote from Derek Nobbs for the Mexican skull. Hmmm...  Confused

The Bat-Woman would make a nice tattoo, I think. I like the "Einstürzende Neubauten"-one, but then everybody will associate it with that band - which might become awkward... who knows.

But that's the whole point, isn't it? I guess you're right though, maybe my love and admiration for Neubauten won't last forever after all.  Rolling Eyes

I like that one. But then it looks like striped socks which counts me out as being objective.
