"Art as Technique", from 1916 iirc, is an interesting essay by Russian/Soviet critic Viktor Shklovsky. In it he coins the term "ostranenie", translated into "estrangement" or "defamiliarization" - the idea of making something well known seem strange, in order to prolong the process of perception. Thus making people see things as they really are, rather than how their preconceived ideas make them appear
