$122 million in damages ordered in "Scream" theft

OSLO (Reuters) - A Norwegian court ordered two men to pay $122 million in damages Tuesday after convicting them for the 2004 theft of Edvard Munch's masterpieces "The Scream" and "Madonna" and then jailing them for seven and eight years.

Alleged Munch Thief Believed Dead

(AP) One of the three masked gunmen who snatched the Edvard Munch masterpieces "The Scream" and "Madonna" in a brazen August 2004 raid is believed to be a 27-year-old Norwegian who died this month, Oslo police announced Thursday.

The masterpieces, which are considered priceless, were recovered by police in August, two years after they were stolen. The paintings suffered minor damage and were undergoing repair at the Oslo Munch Museum, where they had been on display.

I actually saw a documentary about this yesterday, and they look truly awful. The "Madonna" has several big holes in it and "The Scream" suffers from great water damage and faded colours in the bottom third.

Munch prices “driven up by thefts”

According to auctioneers, works by Edvard Munch have significantly increased in price as a direct result of the 2004 robbery of the artist’s The Scream and Madonna. In May, Munch’s Girls on a Bridge, 1902, sold for $30.8m at Sotheby’s, tripling the painter’s previous auction record. The same work was sold in 1996 for $7.7m.
