I'm sorry but I really don't understand the purpose of these random link posts and what they contribute to the forum?

well I was hoping I wouldn't be the only one to post here of course, I just didn't see any other place to place such a thing, a thread for that feeling when you come across an artist or a designer and you think "I'd very much like to share this, and not just posting one piece on my blog, but letting people look over the whole". There was no hierarchy here, as I don't suppose there should ever be, just what I was intrigued by of late. And I did notice that most members were using entire threads for a single person that caught their fancy. Does this make any sense?

Well, not really, to be honest, and the lack of information to the links posted is still vexing me as it's the opposite of a discussion - it's more like a statement. And yes, I'm afraid to say there is a hierarchy here as listed in the Manifesto.

Also, your observation is not true. The most popular and most frequented threads are the long image threads where we research a subject visually. Single artist threads can work too but there has to be a bit more explanation than just a few random links that have nothing to do with each other.

This is actually a very interesting analysis of what works on a forum and why with regard to this forum:

http://wurzeltod.ch/wurzelforum/index.php?PHPSESSID=58ftrgmhi5mjq6idfv0dra8d46&action=stats

I just simply don't believe in the idea that there should be an infinite number of threads with zero replies but instead discussions of a varied nature within related threads. Quality over quantity.

The way this forum works technically, is that posts with zero responses get deleted after a while anyway and I think with things like microblogging websites, forums are really mainly a tool to collect things in a thematic structure rather than making single posts.

well I'll bring my idea to a basic low, and let you weigh in what you might do, were you me. I find an artist's portfolio and am impressed/enthralled/excited and I want to share their art with this community, how do I go about it?

First, make sure it's something that really deserves the attention, then search in the search section to avoid double posts and then put it in an already existing thematic überthread.

We've covered so many visual subjects that it's unlikely there isn't one there already that fits your needs. Rather than posting entire portfolios of people it would be more interesting to pick out one aspect and link that to an already ungoing discussion.

This makes other users who are already part of that thread be notified of your post and keeps a conversation flowing.

Starting a topic should always be kind of a BIG thing. At least on this forum.

Of course there are times when you'll find yourself going "Eyeballs! We need a thread about eyeballs!" because you've researched the subject and there's plenty of info out there so YOU KNOW it'll work and that's how new threads are created - with a abundant source of contributions already in the back of your head.

Again, this isn't how all forums work, but it's how this forum works, which I'm hosting and which I'm responsible for.

I'd like to, but can we take Achraf or Zoetica for instance? or any of those fashion links? i just don't see where I could drop them in, I mean I can't sneak them into the mermaids thread, or the mirrors thread, is there a flora and fauna post? Z's done some vegetation-like things...I just dunno, I'd like to work within the "themes" of the threads, I would.

Then maybe it's because fashion and certain other things are not really that relevant to this particular forum unless they slide into more artistic themes? Basically, not all information ever matters and that's precisely WHY it makes more sense to post in überthreads because even if it doesn't matter much it will still stay in the flow of posts but not stand out too much. It can still be a part of something without having to be in the way, if that makes sense.

Anyway, I'm not picking you out to have a go at you as this should probably be in the manifesto which we wrote in 2004 - it just sums up my idea of this forum and I guess so far all users who post regularly always had this very same idea which is why it worked and still supplied us with new materials and new threads from time to time.

A great recently user-started thread was "Symbiosis" for instance. A lot of visual material can go into that.
