At first it really does look like a photo, but it's supposed to be a black and white image of a painting by William Sargeant Kendall. It's called The Sphinx. He did a more recognizable painting of Psyche, but the rest of his work isn't very interesting to me. I can't find a larger and color version of this and would appreciate it if any of you knew of a better image of it. Plus I wanted to start a sphinx thread! I'll add more soon. |

Suzanne. I believe it's supposed to be a sphinx in line with the symbolist sphinx(think of von stuck). Where I found it they also had it with those Theda pictures, but I've seen it a few other places still attributed to Kendall and not compared to the pictures you linked. It always confused me too because it really does look like a black & white photo(a blurry one), but then I've seen some of his other paintings turned to black and white and they also look photographic like this one  |

I see. Well, I wish I could help but I really don't have any leads. Even TinEye doesn't recognise the image. Let's hope that someone else sees this and has an answer.

Those are adorable Suzanne!  by Von Stuck  I like this Max Klinger one. And here are the many ones by Ernst Fuchs.  I wish I could see his better, but since they are sculptures it seems hard to find good photos of them. |
