I was much amused by this topic.
It reminded me of my  late paternal grandmother who,  due to a car accident  had a prosthetic left eye, and my uncle the prominent linguist, who  used to bring her new ones from each of his many trips to St.  Peters burg  which, at the time  had this famous prosthetics manufacturers.
 As a child I have been fascinated with these objects in particular how they were not globular, but flat on one side and concave,
always comparing them to  a nut shell. 
Thank you for reminding me of this, apparently forgotten memory of my long lost childhood.
