Monsieur Padam,
I might be the inofficial international head of the Art Basel boycott committee, but I lived in the town for 5 years 2001-2006, so I think I can recommend a few places even though the city must have changed a great deal
Places to eat/drink/hang out:
- Hirscheneck!! - punk, vegan, great soy coffees and lovely cakes
- Cargo Bar
- Roter Engel
- Kaserne
- Mitte
- Restaurant im Warteck PP ("Cantina Don Camillo" I think.. it's in the old brewery tower close to the art fair)
... also, there was the really weird café/bar in Gerbergässlein (I think..) with loads of taxidermied animals that looked more like a dusty old toy shop than a bar, but it was fantastic! Can't remember the name though.
Places to see:
- Rhine
- Basler Münster
- Fondation Beyeler (Riehen)
- Museum Tinguely
- Schaulager
- Comix Shop Basel
- Spalenberg/Nadelberg
But basically.. have a sit down at the Rhine, drink some great wine and enjoy the city (.. not the art!)
