I got two very friendly emails from a very friendly IE-user the other day. I was wondering whether anyone of you still uses that browser and ever had a similar problem:

Quote
I use IE6

From a blog site, I found a link to your site. I clicked on the link and went there.

When I wanted to return to the blog site I came from, I clicked on the back button to return to the site I came from.

After clicking, the page refreshes and I am returned back to your site instead of the site I came from.

That is about as simple as I can explain it, because that is every step I took and describes exactly what happened and how it is different from what should have happened.

The back button should be allowed to return me to the site I came from.

In case you are used to a different spelling or name, then this button is found on the left hand side, near the top. It is found on the same line as the forward button, the stop button, the refresh button, and the home button.

The basic concept of blocking the back button is rude and bad etiquette.

There are numerous commercial sites that use this technique to keep the visitor on their site.

Before I visited your site I visited many other sites on which the back button worked correctly.

After I visited your site I visited many other sites on which the back button worked correctly.

This is a good indication that the cause comes from your site, not my equipment.

I hope this explains everything.

Even if it doesn't. I will not spend any more time on this or your site.

Ray

Any ideas what went wrong here (not with Ray, with the browser...)?

Most definitely. (SCNR ...Twisted Evil )

I don't want to join in with the average Microsoft bashing, but reading things like "return to the blog site I came from, I clicked on the back button to return to the site I came from." makes my eyes bleed.

On a more constructive note: I tried the main page as well as the forum in both IE7 (Vista) and IE6 (Win2K) and did not notice anything unusual. PEBKAC I guess.

Will you continue your site even without Ray spending time here?  Rolling Eyes

Hmm... even though it sure hurts me tremendously to lose such a critical and technically skilled reader, I don't give a rat's ass about IE users.  Very Happy

Thank you loads for testing it! suziebear

And weeeeeeeeeeeeee! Here he goes again:

I have only set up a few web pages, but blocking the back button operation has been an option for many years. I personally ran into that option back in 2001.

This is a common tactic among high pressure web sites. To my knowledge you are not currently selling anything, but I will not frequent sites that make use of this tactic. Most of the time I only run into that on the porno sites that we all have accidentally clicked on.

As I stated before, my back button worked fine on all the sites I visited both before and after I visited your site. So it is only human that I get the impression your site is the one causing this problem.

There is nothing else to be said. I am sure my not visiting will not make any significant difference in your life or business. I just wanted to let you know that feature is very annoying to many people. If you discover a way to change this, good. If not, we go on anyway. My friends who have experienced this have never taken the time to complain or inform anybody. My initial assumption was that you had hired a programmer to do your web page and that person initialized that feature. If so, ask them to change it. If not, Oh Well.

No Response Needed.

If course I did send a response.. Wink

Grab some popcorn! Now that Ray went way below the "that's so incredibly stupid it's not even funny" limit .... it's starting to get interesting again ...  Cool
Oh and ...  I like the "porno sites that we all have accidentally clicked on" part very much  spasticmonkey

Well, I'll keep you posted. Above all when all his (imaginary) "friends who have experienced this [and] have never taken the time to complain or inform anybody" start writing me emails. Hurrah!
